Why did the people of Babel build a tower?

For many years after the Great Flood, people were content to farm the land and raise their families. They all spoke the same language. But then one day they learned how to make bricks. "Let's build a tall tower that will reach up to heaven," they cried. "We will be famous, and no one will be able to destroy our great work."
When the Lord saw what the people were doing, he gave them different languages. Suddenly all work on the tall tower stopped. No one could understand anyone else. God scattered all the people of Babel all over the earth that day, each group speaking a different language.
